What is a Morse code translator?

A Morse code translator converts ordinary writing into the dots and dashes used by International Morse code, or turns a Morse message back into readable text. Morse assigns each letter, number and several punctuation marks a unique short pattern. It was designed for sending messages through sound, light or electrical signals, and it remains useful for learning, hobby radio, puzzles and accessibility experiments.

Translate text to Morse code

  • Select Text to Morse.
  • Type or paste the message you want to convert.
  • Translate the text, then copy or download the result.
  • Use spaces between Morse letters and a slash between words.

The translator changes letters to uppercase because Morse code does not distinguish between upper- and lowercase. Standard letters A through Z, digits 0 through 9 and common punctuation are included. A question mark in the output means the source contained a character that does not have a supported Morse pattern.

Decode Morse code to text

Choose Morse to text and paste a sequence of dots and dashes. Put a space between every letter code, such as .... . .-.. .-.. ---, and a forward slash between words, such as .... .. / - .... . .-. .. Extra spaces around the slash are accepted, so copied Morse messages are easy to clean up.

The decoder marks an unrecognized code with a question mark instead of guessing. Check that every letter is separated by a space and every word by a slash if a result is not what you expect. A continuous string of dots and dashes has no reliable letter boundaries, so it cannot always be decoded accurately without separators.

How Morse code timing relates to writing

When sent by sound or light, dots are short signals and dashes are longer signals. The spacing shown by this tool represents the pauses between signals: one space separates letters and a slash represents the larger pause between words. This written format is convenient for sharing, though an operator sending Morse manually also uses timing to make the message clear.

Private browser translation

All translation runs in your browser, without uploading your message to a server. You can translate notes, practice phrases or sample transmissions without an account. Copy the result directly into another application or download a plain text file. Keep your original message nearby if it matters, especially when your text contains symbols outside the supported Morse alphabet.

Frequently asked questions

How are words separated in Morse code?

This tool uses a forward slash (/) between words and spaces between individual letters.

Does it support numbers?

Yes. The translator supports digits 0 through 9 as well as letters and common punctuation.

Why is there a question mark in my result?

It indicates an unsupported text character or a Morse pattern the decoder does not recognize.

Is my message uploaded?

No. Translation happens entirely in your browser.
